Indian Hollow Happenings May 15-18

This year there will be an addition to the festivities at Indian Hollow, taking place between Friday, May 15, 2015 and Monday, May 18, 2018

.  Every year for the past 25 years the MA/RI Council has sponsored this event at the Army Corps of Engineers campground along the Westfield River.

TU members from across Massachusetts and Rhode Island can camp out and fish the river for no charge all weekend, leaving Monday at noon. On Saturday afternoon there will be a barbecue sponsored by the Council open to everyone for no charge. The Council will have it's business meeting before the barbecue.

Weather over the years has varied from summer-like to snow. The river, depending on the rain and temperatures, can be in good order, or not. Usually there is good fishing to be had. If not, there's plenty of good fellowship, with a bonfire held on Saturday evenings.

This year, on Saturday afternoon, there will be a raffle and auction with some incredible prizes. The Council made one of its largest expenditures ever this past spring, collaborating with the Chapters in the Council to help the Franklin Land Trust purchase the Crowningshield parcel along the West Branch of the North River. This raffle and auction will be for the specific purpose of helping the council recharge its financial battery, and give it the ability to take advantage of other opportunities like this that are sure to arise in the future.

Included in the prizes will be two sets of Red Sox tickets, guided trips on the Swift River, one by noted poet and angler Gary Metras from the Pioneer Valley Chapter. We will have a float trip on the Deerfield by one of the experienced hands on the river, Chris Jackson. Council Chairman John Troiano is going to guide a trip for the hex hatch on the Wood River in RI. A Peak Dawn Anglers trip guided by Boston Chapter President Fred Jennings, who grew up fishing the marsh in Ipswich he now guides on and has for the past 20 years. Fred is well-known for using light weight rods to tame schoolie stripers. Have Fred explain to you what Peak Dawn means.

We'll have large numbers of fresh and salt water flies, and several unique items, including some incredible gourmet baked goods just perfect for dessert around the campfire.

Finally, Boston Chapter member Vincent MacFarlane has made an incredible donation of a week's stay at his family home in Margaree Center between September 19 and 25, 2015. The house can more than comfortably accommodate four anglers. In addition to the week's lodging, there will be three days of guiding for Atlantic Salmon on the Margaree River with noted Nova Scotia guide Robert Chaison. Robert grew up in and now lives in Cheticamp, and is one of the most enthusiastic salmon fisherman you will ever meet. He knows the Cape Breton rivers, including the Margaree, like the back of his hand.

And if that is not enough, the house sits right next to a river and a brook loaded with wild brook trout. The season for trout ends September 30, 2015 in Nova Scotia. Vincent reports having memorable days of fishing for trout right out the back door of the house.

Margaree-2

Here is a description of the house itself and the location.

Four bedrooms in Upper Margaree, with a kitchen, living room, den,
bathroom. Linens and towels are supplied, as are dishes. There is a BBQ.

Vincent says, " The SW branch of the Margaree flows behind our house.
The river is great for Salmon fishing in the Fall and trout fishing
in May, June, July, August and September. There is a brook that flows along side the house and empties into the river. We are 10 min. away from world class golf courses and beaches in Inverness."

Aside from the time he has donated to TU, Vincent also rents the house and has time available in June, August and September. Contact him at:
floodtide1970@yahoo.com.

Please bring your checkbooks, and be generous. IOUs will be accepted if you are caught short of cash.
Please let the members of your chapter know about this raffle and auction, and please post on your chapter web sites.

If you would like to make a donation to this raffle, and auction at Indian Hollow, which would be greatly appreciated, please contact Peter Schilling at
pmacds@aol.com or 508-540-2045. Or, if you'd like more information, please call.

April Meeting - John Hansen - Fly Fishing the Colorado Mountains

JohnHanson

John Hansen, is the fly fishing manager at Orvis of Peabody. John came to New England from the Vail Valley in Colorado, where he fished extensively and also guided for six years. He'll speak about fly fishing in the Colorado Mountains including the Colorado River.

John grew up fly fishing in Colorado and was groomed on such waters as the Colorado and Eagle Rivers, the Roaring Fork, and Gore Creek. His passion for fly fishing blossomed into a career, where John guided anglers, either wading or on drift boats, in Colorado and the fabled Kenai River in Alaska. He now calls New England home and thoroughly enjoys the enriching and tight-knit North Shore fly-fishing community. Whether he’s chasing stripers on Cape Ann or trout in western Massachusetts, John is doing what he loves and enjoys sharing his passion with others.

This months dining feast features our annual corned beef and cabbage dinner brepared by our resident Irishman Mike O'neill. Don't miss this delicious meal. See you there!

Michelle Craddock
Mass Div of Ecological Restoration

Michelle is DER's statewide Flow Restoration Specialist.  Her topic will focus on the River Instream Flow Stewards Program (RIFLS) and the influence of people on the seasonal flows of water in the Ipswich River. TU NorEast has funded the purchase of equipment for monitoring the tributaries of the upper Ipswich. This will be your opportunity to learn about your impact on the science of managing stream flow and its importance to fish populations.

Michelle has a strong background in river science. She has worked with the EPA on water issues in the Great Lakes Region, done her graduate work at UNH on the influence of farms on rivers, and received her BA at BU. She has been working with the Division of Ecological Restoration for 3 years and brings a wealth of expertise to restoring our rivers.

Elections

Just a heads up that we'll be holding elections for the chapter executives at our January meeting. All of the positions will be open. Taking a leadership role in the chapter is a great way to do a little more toward the protection of our local resources.

Thanks once again to everyone who volunteers time for the chapter. We truly appreciate all of your hard work.

Hope to see you Monday.

Nor'East Chapter Culvert Project Featured Nationally in Trout Magazine!

From our Newsletter by Jim MacDougall:

Thanks to our past President, Kevin Correa, the Chapter's restoration project in Boxford has been highlighted in this issue of "Trout"! Check it out! Kevin, a professional writer, submitted this article sometime ago to the editors of the TU magazine. Great job Kevin and much deserved recognition to the hard work of the members of this Chapter. You all earned it. Congratulations.

Nor'East Chapter Completes Culvert Replacement
Four years after emerging from a long dormancy, the Nor'East Chapter completed a
culvert replacement resulting in greater stream connectivity. The worksite was at
Crooked Pond Brook in the Town of Boxford, Mass., located 25-miles north of Boston.

The goal of the project was to improve passage for native brook trout and other wildlife.
The former perched culverts made it impossible for fish, invertebrates, amphibians and
small animals to move upstream during normal to lower stream flow conditions. The
replacement culvert provides a more natural transition for wildlife to access ecologically
pristine upstream reaches.

The replacement, which was partially funded by an Embrace-A-Stream grant, arose from
an Eagle Scout project. In 2010, Eagle Scout candidate Eric Murrer conducted an
investigative study of the surrounding watershed. His work—which was supervised by
Jim MacDougall, a chapter member and professional wetland scientist—yielded a habitat
score of 85% and a thriving macroinvertebrate population of early stoneflies, mayflies
and caddis in Crooked Pond Brook. After reviewing the study, the chapter voted to work
toward rectifying the inadequate culvert.

The work at the site was a partnership of many local organizations, including the Town of
Boxford, Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control, the Boxford Trails
Association/Boxford Open Land Trust, and the Ipswich River Watershed Association.

The culvert replacement was the first project of this magnitude for the Nor'East Chapter.
While it resulted in tangible improvements to the habitat, the chapter realized benefits as
well. A true learning process, the chapter was able to identify and tap internal resources
without whose expertise the costs of the project would have been prohibitive.

565 volunteer hours went into the replacement, and the work of a handful of chapter
members warrants special recognition: Overall oversight of the project fell into the
capable hands of Greg Murrer; Jim MacDougall conducted wetlands services at the site;
Mike O'Neill provided all engineering work; and Chett Walsh provided general project
and construction management.

The chapter is proud of the replacement culvert, and it's ready to capitalize on the
accomplishment and move forward to the next big project.
